In early August an unlikely group of men report for the annual Rekero bar schooling and exam. I say unlikely because not one of these eager delegates, all part of our mess team, has ever drunk alcohol and they will not be starting now.

Wilson, who works at Acacia House should get an automatic pass in this annual workout but chooses to turn up anyway. He has been doing this for more than 20 years and could teach the examiners a thing or two. Johnson (Head of Mess) is first up and he sails through. He has been in charge so long that it is rare guests get to see the bottom of their glass. Daniel (Assistant Head of Mess), the master of the 'Bloody Shame' our very own Virgin Mary, demonstrates his latest conquests; mulled wine and the perfect Pimms. Evans, Stanley and John pour shots in a suitably liberal manner to score full marks. Finally, it is the turn of William R and William K, who bravely take responsibility for the murky world of whiskey. Scottish, Irish, single and blend are smelt and studiously held up to the light. There is a lot of nose wrinkling and deep discussion before they declare they are done.

So what is the distinction between a 5 and 10 year old whiskey for men who have never sampled what they purvey? They are, the examiners are told, ‘as different as Fanta and Coca-Cola’. I couldn’t have been clearer myself.

Have good one won't you,

Gordie

Over the past three decades of my life here in the Mara, I have seen a number of cheetahs jostling for supremacy on the game rich grasslands.

You may know of, or even remember, the three brothers; Tom, Dick and Harry, who were once the dominant force of the Mara plains. Today only one remains, battered, scarred and tired. There is little doubt that a legend will come to an end in the midst of this frantic season.  There are a number of reasons for this rapid decline in prosperity. It is in part due to a wily lone female cheetah over at the marshes and the family of Shakira (of BBC Big Cat Fame), but more significantly, because of the emergence of a new and more lethal challenge.

Three young brothers; Snap, Crackle and Pop, sons of the legendary Honey, have taken cooperative hunting to a whole new level this August. Their territory is vast and it is growing all the time. The picture below is part of a sequence taken last week by the Jain family and gives an indication of the damage they are capable of doing as a trio.

The talk around the camp fire at night is of a new dynasty. It is of how they could well be the most ruthless predators to have stalked our plains in living memory. As always, only time will tell.

My very best salaams from us all,

Gerard

We have been thick with wildebeest these past few weeks, which has turned the plains around camp into a grunting black mass. While they swarm all over our view, we have been joined in camp by some things that are altogether bigger.

The first to move in with us were the elephants. They have been in the river for the last three evenings, which on one occasion meant I was trapped in a guest tent for a good while. The elephants lazily chomped away on the bushes right around the tent. The most exciting bit about this is that one of them is a tiny baby. The little one must be no more than a year old and both mum and baby are super relaxed around the camp. Yesterday evening, from amongst the heaving mass of wildebeest, we were joined by around 300 buffalo which made for a thrilling night of munching and crunching. Just as they drifted away this morning two male lions, roaring in unison, journeyed down the river past the camp and onto the wildebeest filled plains.

We were all discussing at lunch today that we, like the lions, must pay more attention to the wildebeest or they might be tempted to move on prematurely. So, with sundowners in hand, that is what the guests and I plan to do right now.

Very best wishes from a full camp,

Dudu

This week I wanted to write about one of Rekero stars!! We talk of Cheetah and Leopard, and marvel at their antics, but the heavy weights often get left out. We have a pride of lions that live near us, 18 strong, some of you will be lucky enough to know Snaggle Tooth’s pride. The pride consists of Snaggle tooth the alpha male, 4 adult females and an assortment of cubs of varying ages. I want to just look at Snaggle Tooth, who was referred to the other day by a visiting guide as “not a very pretty lion” and disappeared off to find some of his neighbouring rivals. And suddenly deep down I was
